So that was the fantasy: something Zhao Yunlan could almost, almost believe. His heart clenched. Suddenly he understood Zhu Hong's temptation to keep dreaming. But the true Shen Wei was still missing. Zhao Yunlan needed to wake up for real.

Slo-Mo Rewatch: Guardian episode 8, part 2

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purple sky with stars. Text reads, "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid_guardian.dreamwidth.org"

Hi, welcome to this week's instalment of the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is last week's half-episode. On to the second half!

Episode 8, from 22:19:

Summary: In Dixing, the Regent sends a smoke message. In Haixing, Shen Wei pours his drunk mentor into car and then finds Zhao Yunlan ill on the kerb. He takes him home in a taxi (where he serves as a pillow), then discovers Zhao Yunlan's disaster apartment (featuring: wine bottles, dirty dishes, THE FRIDGE). During the night, Zhu Jiu finds the pillar with the Mountain-River Awl, but can't approach it. Meanwhile Shen Wei discovers that Zhao Yunlan asked Dixing about him and the Regent is ratting him out. He alters the message. In the morning, Zhao Yunlan wakes up to a tidy flat and Shen Wei sitting next to his bed. He tries to recruit Shen Wei for the SID again, but fails again. Wang Zheng sees a newspaper report about an earthquake in the Hanga mountains, passes out and regains her memory. Da Qing comes to tell Zhao Yunlan and finds Shen Wei there in the early morning. The Sundial begins to glow and resonate with the Awl; Lin Jing traces the source to the mountains.

Wang Zheng is passing out

Quote:

Shen Wei: "I suggest you eat regular meals. I don't want to find you on the road again."

Zhao Yunlan: "If you want to know whether I eat regular meals, why don't you just join ourSID, and you'll know?"

Shen Wei: "So your SID doesn't need a consultant, it needs a nanny?"

Detail:

I always notice that when Shen Wei takes off Zhao Yunlan's boots, he accidentally slips one of Zhao Yunlan's socks off his heel and doesn't pull it back up, argh! :p

Questions:

What's going through Shen Wei's head in the taxi? How is Zhao Yunlan feeling about Shen Wei taking him home? What's your favourite detail in Zhao Yunlan's flat? What's Shen Wei's favourite detail? Why do you think Zhao Yunlan keeps trying to recruit Shen Wei after Shen Wei has refused more than once? Do you think Shen Wei is seriously hoping to warn Zhao Yunlan away from leaving Dragon City? Why is Da Qing surprised to find Shen Wei with Zhao Yunlan in the morning? Why does Wang Zheng try to leave the SID? Any thoughts about how any of this compares to the novel? Or about parallels with other parts of the drama?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

For the next two weekends, we're taking a break for the holidays - time to catch up on the rewatch, if you've been meaning to! Regular posts will resume on 9 January.

Here is our schedule for the current batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!

WWW Wednesday

real quick today cause I'm very low on time before I have to go vend

1. What are you currently reading?

  • Lout of Count's Family vol. 5 by Yu Ryeo-Han: both my other Libby novels are due sooner. I started this anyway.
  • The Dream of the Red Chamber by Tsao Hsueh-Chin: chipped away a bit more over the weekend, expect to read more today (I've been bringing it vending, when I don't want to use my phone cause I need the charge to last, so I leave myself no choice but to read the thing I'm meh about. It's not even that it's bad, I'm just not finding it very engaging. The last couple chapters were actually more interesting to me, tho, so I'm hoping that keeps up.)

2. What have you recently finished reading?

  • The Apothecary Diaries light novel vol. 1 by Natsu Hyuuga: I enjoyed it enough to keep going, at least. I think of the three versions I've encountered (manga and anime being the other two) I liked this one the best.
  • 我和我对家 by PEPA: I finished it! I finished it! Reading the censored version continued to be hilarious but I do think that by the end a casual reader could have figured out they're in love, lmao.
  • I Ship My Rival x Me manhua vol. 1 and 2 by PEPA: I think immediately turned around and started rereading the manhua again, for all the couples feels that got censored out of the book.
  • BL Metamorphosis vol. 5 by Kaori Tsurutani: I was kinda disappointed in the conclusion. It felt rushed, and there was no payoff on what the younger half of the friendship would do. Like, she started doing art. Is she gonna continue? Do they stay in touch? It felt weak, even the few plotlines that were introduced had virtually no pay-off.
  • Girl Friends vol. 1 by Milk Morinaga: by far my least favorite of the Morinaga titles I've read so far.
  • I am NOT Starfire by Mariko Tamaki: eh, it was fine I guess
  • Kase-san and Yamada vol. 1 by Hiromi Takashima: I thought this was a vol. 1 considering. it says it's a vol. 1. But it's actually volume 6. Still, it was followable... and I didn't like it much, Kase-san is weirdly controlling and jealous in ways that weren't in anyway acknowledged and were treated as okay.
  • Dandadan vol. 4: Yukinobu Tatsu: the crack continues. Not that I expected it to end.

3. What will you read next?

Novels: I have Lucky Day by Chuck Tingle and A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett on Libby and have to read them before they run out of time, so.

Physical Library Loans: The Backstagers vol. 1 to 3 by James Tynion IV and others

Libby: After Hours by Yuhta Nishio and Heavy Vinyl: Y2K-O by Carly Usdin are both due in under a week, so at minimum those. I have a lot of Libby loans rn, a bunch of holds came through at the same time, so I expect to try to get through a lot of them as I have the time.

Mini-Drama Bonanza

Round-up of a bunch of recent baihe mini-dramas (with the usual dose of plausible deniability), all in vertical format.

1. My Bestie is Three Thousand Years Old (我的姐妹三千岁, pinyin: wo de jiemei san qian sui). A kind-hearted but penniless girl stumbles into a suspiciously long-lived ice queen CEO's life, and eventually they learn that their fates have been connected for thousands of years. Lightweight and very tropey, but fairly fun (especially if you don't think too hard about it). It aired originally on the Hongguo (红果) app, and can also be viewed on the Fanqie (番茄) app. It is available here with English subtitles. 89 episodes of two to three minutes each.

2. Met Her Majesty the Emperor While On the Run (逃婚路上遇女帝, pinyin: taohun lushang yu nüdi). A voice actress time-travels to the past, and finds herself in the body of a young woman who has sort-of accidentally murdered her new husband on their wedding night. She goes on the run, in the process of which she encounters and helps (and is helped by) the titular female emperor. The writing is pretty weak, and the production looks very low-budget, and I think you'd have the best chance of enjoying this if you turned your brain mostly off. It aired originally on Douyin (playlist here) and can be viewed here on YouTube with truly woeful MTL English subtitles and muted-out BGM. 59 episodes of two to three minutes each. Content notes: sexual assault and threats thereof, some ableism.

3. Two Empresses Dowager Reborn (两宫太后重生了,更改诏书换皇帝, pinyin: liang gong taihou chongsheng le, genggai zhaoshu huan huangdi). On the day her son takes the throne, Noble Consort Yu Lianruo has her rival Empress Chu Jiuyin put to death — only to be betrayed in her turn. When she wakes up, having been reborn just before that fateful day, she swears vengeance and gains an unlikely ally. For the optimum viewing experience, turn off your brain slightly (though not as much as for the previous show), ignore the whiplash pacing, plot holes and continuity errors, and focus on having a good time shipping the empress and the consort (plus the secret secondary f/f couple). Jiang Wuhan, who plays the empress, also plays the CEO in My Bestie is Three Thousand Years Old. It aired originally on the Hongguo app, and can also be viewed on the Fanqie app. It is available here with bad MTL English subtitles and muted BGM. 80 episodes of two to three minutes each. Content notes: sexual assault (of big bad) played for laughs, implied rape.

4. Be Her Persistence (犟骨, pinyin: jiang gu). Zheng Xingxing time-travels back to the late Qing Dynasty/early Republican Era, where she meets Jiang Jinghua, a young woman from a rich, abusive family. Together the two of them strike a blow against the patriarchy by setting up a school for girls and women. The costumes and props are surprisingly high quality, though I had questions about historical accuracy and especially plot accuracy — surely these girls shouldn't be so nicely dressed when they've barely got two coppers to rub together and are huddling in an abandoned temple for shelter? The same cannot be said for the writing, which goes from marginally serviceable (though rather didactic) at the beginning to an INCREDIBLE number of plot holes and dropped plotlines towards the end, which is a pity given the ambition and importance of the theme. Jiang Jinghua is played by Peng Yaqi, who also plays Song Jiayu in Be Her Resilience (以她之韧, pinyin: yi ta zhi ren), hence my title translation for this show. This aired originally on Xiaohongshu (playlist here). It is available here with bad MTL English subtitles and muted-out BGM. 44 episodes of two to three minutes each. Note: Peng Yaqi also plays Zheng Xingxing's grandmother (I don't know why, perhaps an anti-censorship measure?) but the show makes it very clear that the grandmother and Jiang Jinghua are not the same person.
